HELP WITHOUT THE JARGON

Domain questions.
Straight answers.

The essentials about registration, renewals, DNS, transfers and keeping control of your domain.

Registration

What happens when I search for a domain?

We check the name and extension you entered. If you leave off the extension, the search starts with .com. If the name is available, you can continue to the secure checkout system.

Why do some extensions have a longer first term?

Some registries set minimum registration periods. The pricing page shows the first available term held in our current pricing file.

Renewals

Do you use cheap first-year offers?

Not as a way to hide an inflated renewal rate. Our aim is straightforward pricing rather than a headline bargain that becomes expensive at renewal.

Can prices ever change?

Yes. Registry and supplier costs can change, so we cannot promise that a price will remain unchanged forever. We can promise not to build the service around a deliberately low first-year price followed by a deliberately inflated renewal.

DNS and nameservers

Can I use another hosting company?

Yes. A domain and a website do not have to be with the same provider. You can point your domain at the nameservers or DNS records supplied by your web host.

What are nameservers?

Nameservers tell the internet which DNS service holds the records for your domain. Those records then direct web, email and other services to the right place.

Control and transfers

Can I transfer my domain later?

Domain owners are not locked into Just Domains. Transfers are subject to the registry rules for the extension and any standard transfer restrictions.

Will transferring a domain move my website?

No. Registrar transfer and website migration are separate things. Keeping the existing nameservers usually leaves the current hosting configuration in place while the registrar changes.
